Comfortable, deeply caring, approach to therapy in Portland, Maine

Dr. Chris Chiverton is a clinical psychologist specializing in assessment and psychotherapy of children, adolescents, and young adults.

My approach to therapy is centered on creating an authentic space where the client feels safe.

I enjoy tailoring therapy to each client and am committed to utilizing high-quality evidence-based treatment.

I often draw from attachment, family systems, narrative, play, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral approaches.

My main focuses

  • Child Psychotherapy and Adolescent Psychotherapy

I aim to meet children and adolescents where they are. This may look like lying on the floor and racing cars, shooting hoops in the office, drawing pictures to tell a story, or learning about their world through use of magnatiles to start.

Whether it's through child-directed play, art, activities the child chooses, or conversation, my first goal is to foster a strong connection and create a place where the child feels comfortable and safe. Once a connection is established I will use evidence based treatments alongside fun, laughter, and warmth to support the child in meeting their unique goals.

  • Adult Psychotherapy

I approach individual therapy differently with every client. My hope is to learn about you and find out what resonates with you.  I strive to be warm, open, and personable. I greatly value honesty and making sure the client feels as though "I get" what they are experiencing.

I work well with individuals who are struggling with anxiety and depression, relationship struggles, major life transitions, and professional, relational, and family stress. I am also experienced in working with male related issues as well as sports psychology. I am extensively trained in client-centered interventions, ACT, IFS,  motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

  • Evaluations

I specialize in comprehensive psychological testing and evaluation for children, teenagers and adults.

Assessment can help create a clear picture of what would be helpful for problems with mood, behavior, or learning.
